What Is Transgender

Transgender defined means, “denoting or relating to a person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex.”

Transgender is a blanket term for many different types of people. Not everyone who comes into the Transgender community is looking to have gender reassignment surgery. There are a wide variety of people who look to us for support. Transgender can include people who are looking to fully transition, people who crossdress as well as those who live day to day as the opposite sex but have no desire to fully transition.

Gender Dysphoria

Gender Dysphoria defined means: “the condition of feeling one’s emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one’s biological sex.” Gender Dysphoria is a recognized medical condition. It is not a mental illness. People with this condition have a persistent desire to live according to the gender they identify with instead of their biological gender. Symptoms often occur early in life starting with disgust toward their own genitals, depression, loneliness and social isolation.

Here is a quick overview of some of the people who are considered transgender:

  • Transgender (Pre-op, post-op and non-op)
  • Crossdressers
  • Gender Fluid
  • Genderqueer
  • Questioning etc.

It’s our duty to accept everyone into this group and support them no matter what they’re going through. Please be kind to others in dialogue on this site. Remember that kindness is always free.

So many people in the trans community find themselves believing that the world is against them and in some cases, it may be. We’re here to build an empire and support people who may be going through a transition and their loved ones.

What Can I Do To Help?

Everyone can help the people around them. You don’t have to be transgender in order to help your fellow man, however, most people in the transgender community are trans. The majority of the Boston Transgender online community is also transgender. One of the perks about this fact is that we all know what it’s like to go through something that we can’t control, like gender dysphoria. As with anything else in life, you can choose to help and protect. That is the most important gift you can give to any of us here in the Boston transgender community.
